Jablonec was founded at the Nisa River in the middle of the 14th century. During the Middle Ages it was not as important as other towns in the region, which were built in more fertile parts of the kingdom. After the Thirty Years War when the area was colonized by German glass specialists, glass manufacture started to develop in Jablonec rapidly, leading to fast development of the town as a trade centre.

In the middle of the 18th century the first costume jewellery was made in Jablonec and further fast advancement of the town followed. As a result, lots of important buildings and municipal districts were built. Later two dominant landmarks of Jablonec were built: The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Horní náměstí and the City Hall in Mírové náměstí. Thanks to its significant architectonic monuments, the centre of Jablonec was declared a historical town reserve.

Jablonec nad Nisou is regarded as the gateway to many ski centres, hiking trails and cycle tracks and significant sights in Jizerské hory. There are numerous viewing towers and rock lookouts with fascinating views of the surrounding area.
